Direct Assessment FAQ's

What are Direct Assessments?
Direct assessments are annual government service charges such as sewer, sanitation, street lighting, flood control, parks and recreation, and mosquito abatement which appear on the secured real estate tax bill.

Will this affect the value of my property (Proposition 13) or my relationship with the County Assessor's Office?
Our efforts in performing a direct assessment appeal have never affected property values. We work directly with the government agencies whose annual service charges are placed on the property tax bill as means of guaranteed payment for their services. When performing a direct assessment appeal, we do not deal with the County Assessor's Office.

What if I no longer own the property or I plan on selling it?
It's free and clear money for you. We will only appeal your overpayments for the prior years in which you owned and paid the taxes, governed by the applicable statute of limitations.

What if I already have a property tax firm appealing my property taxes?
The direct assessment appeals will not interfere with any appeal to lower the property taxes that your property tax firm is performing. Although they are on the tax bill, direct assessments are not taxes. They are annual government services charges that are placed on the tax bill as a conduit for the government agencies to collect their fees.

How much time will I spend on this?
Here at MATAX Consulting, we earn our fee. We do most of the work from beginning to end, and assure that the maximum refund amount is obtained. Typically, our clients spend 15-20 minutes in total gathering necessary information.

How does MATAX Consulting get paid?
We work solely on a contingency basis. So, unless refunds are recovered, there is absolutely nothing that you have to pay us. We will simply share in the refunds together.
